Celebrate Heritage And Service During May Holidays.

May has some great holidays ranging from a heritage celebration to honoring national service and caregivers such as mothers and teachers. Here's a few of the major holidays coming up this month.


May 5th, Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo, which translates to “Fifth of May” in Spanish, is a national holiday in Mexico and is celebrated by many people in the United States as well. This day commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in which the Mexican army defeated the French in an unlikely victory. A great local celebration is along Cesar Chavez Street on the West Side of St. Paul. Celebrations begin at 9:00AM and last until 6:00PM on Saturday, May 5th. May 8th, National Teacher’s Day 

This day is to honor our teachers. Many of us have had a special teacher who took time out of their day to go the extra mile for us. If not for some of those teachers in our lives we may not have made it where we are today. So take some time this day to show a special teacher your appreciation.

May 13th, Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is an American holiday to honor our mothers. Whether a biological or adoptive mother, or a motherly figure in your life, celebrate the women in your life that helped you grow and showed you the love of a mother.





May 28th, Memorial Day

Memorial Day is an American holiday remembering the men and women who died during military service to the United States. This Memorial Day plan a visit to the Historic Fort Snelling. On Memorial day, from 10:00AM to 5:00PM there will be a living history timeline of military life. There will be weapons demonstrations and costumed staff interpreting different eras of military history. For more information visit the Minnesota Historical Society website here. 

Two Great Events To See And Do This Weekend.

One of the great benefits of living at Salem Green is our proximity to so many great events in the Twin Cities. There are a couple great events we thought we should tell you about that are taking place this weekend.

On Saturday, May 5th, from 9:00AM to 6:00PM is the West Side Cinco de Mayo celebration in St. Paul. The Cinco de Mayo festival celebrates Mexican heritage and will feature parades, three different stages with shows, plus new to the festival is a "Community Village" where local artists, craftsmen, growers and vendors will display their wares. Another big event this weekend is the Living Green Expo at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. This two day event on Saturday and Sunday, May 5th & 6th, will have over 300 exhibitors and presenters that showcase the latest in green and sustainable living. All new to the Expo this year is a Bike Rodeo! The Expo will feature food, creative activities and it's indoors so if this patch of rainy weather is still with us, you can have fun and stay dry. The Beautiful Sights Of Spring At Salem Green

We're well into one of the most beautiful parts of spring at Salem Green - the Flowering Crabapple trees are in full bloom! Take some time to walk around the community to enjoy the beautiful sights. Check out some of the pictures below taken by Charity. The bright colors of the blooms with Schmidt Lake in the background make such a beautiful sight. Be sure to get out while the blooms last - they don't stick around for long!

Salem Green had a special visitor this past Saturday! Peter Cottontail came to see the kids of Salem at our annual Bunny Day Celebration! Take a look at some of the Salem residents visiting with Peter Cottontail.

Bunny Day Tomorrow at Salem Green

How Many Other Apartment Communities Have Canoes And Paddle Boats For You To Use?

One of the benefits to living at Salem Green Apartments is having Lake Schmidt in your backyard. We offer free paddle boat and canoe rentals for our residents and their guests. All you need to do is stop in the rental office and get all geared up and registered.

One of our residents, Marco, and his cousin, Ian, who was visiting from Milwaukee, spent a day on the lake this past week. They had a blast and are planning head out canoeing again sometime.

A Preview Of April Holidays

April is here and there are all manner of holidays and commemorations in this month. Check them out!

April 1 - April Fool’s Day
A day to pull pranks on your loved ones! Some pranks are light-hearted and some a little more mischievous but as long as everyone gets a laugh and no one gets hurt; go ahead and have some fun with your friends.

April 2 - Autism Awareness Day
Autism Facts: 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with Autism each year and it is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States. Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less-prevalent childhood diseases. Wear blue on this day to show your support for finding the cure for Autism.

April 6 - Good Friday
Good Friday is a religious holiday celebrated by Christians in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus on Calvary.

April 6-14 - Passover
Passover is a Jewish holiday in remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt for the Jewish people. One of the most significant observances during this time is abstaining from eating leavened bread to signify the way the Jewish people had to leave Egypt in a hurry, without time for their bread to rise.

April 8 - Easter
Easter is a Christian celebration. Christians believe that on this day Jesus rose from the dead after his crucifixion.

This is also a day many people celebrate the Easter bunny. Similar to Santa Claus the Easter Bunny also brings gifts to children on the holiday. The Easter Bunnies gifts usually include colored eggs which are traditional Easter symbols of fertility, new birth and the welcoming of spring into the home.

April 19 - Holocaust Remembrance Day
This day is the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising which was the largest revolt by the Jews against the Germans during the Holocaust.
